Victoria in Future (population and households projections to 2056)

Released annually, Victoria in Future 2019 (VIF2019) is the official state government projection of the likely future growth of population and households. It includes trends and projections in birth rates, life expectancy, migration, and living arrangements across all of Victoria. Projections are used by decision makers in government, business and the community to understand the growing and changing population.

Victoria in Future makes projections from 2016 to 2056 for Victoria and the major regions. For Local Government Areas (LGA) and smaller areas (VIFSAs), it covers as far as 2036.

VIF2019 shows Victoria has been growing by more than any other state or territory in the country with the population expected to reach 11.2 million by 2056. It reveals upwards trends in birth rates, life expectancy and migration, and projects that life expectancy will continue to increase.

Looking at trends in living arrangements – VIF2019 shows the number of households in Victoria is projected to almost double to 4.6 million by 2056.

While the majority of change will be in Greater Melbourne which is expected to grow to 9.0 million in 2056, Victoria’s regions are also expected to grow to 2.2 million, with the strongest growth in the three major Regional Centre LGAs. The Cities of Greater Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo are projected to account for around half of all regional growth.
