Melbourne’s position as a global destination for health, medical research and innovation has been strengthened with the opening of the Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD) at St Vincent’s Hospital in Fitzroy.

The ACMD is Australia’s first hospital-based biomedical engineering research centre, bringing together clinicians, scientists, engineers, universities, research institutes and healthcare companies in one integrated environment.

The centre has been designed to accelerate the path from research to real-world care, helping translate medical discoveries into faster and more effective benefits for patients across Victoria and beyond.

Research at the ACMD will focus on chronic and complex conditions including epilepsy, cancer and osteoarthritis, supported by cutting-edge capabilities in artificial intelligence, biotechnology and regenerative medicine.

The facility can accommodate up to 900 researchers and will train up to 300 new doctors each year. It also includes advanced infrastructure such as 3D printing laboratories, robotics, engineering workshops and clinical trial facilities, creating a powerful platform for collaboration and commercialisation.

A dedicated education centre will also support the next generation of clinical, nursing, allied health and biomedical leaders, helping build Victoria’s future workforce in health and medical innovation.

Located within Melbourne’s globally recognised biomedical precinct, the ACMD strengthens Victoria’s ability to attract world-class research talent, new investment and strategic partnerships.

As Michael Krieg, Acting CEO, Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery, said:

This isn't just a research facility, it's where the discoveries made in the lab will find their way to the bedside faster, and more reliably, than ever before.
