Melbourne is Australia’s most innovative city, overtaking Sydney to claim 11th place overall in the annual 2thinknow Innovation Cities Global Index.

Melbourne rose from 16th place in 2018 to its new ranking just outside the world’s top 10, also joining Singapore and Tokyo as one of the most innovative cities in the Asia Pacific.

The result reaffirms the Melbourne’s reputation as a leading tech hub in the Asia Pacific known for world leading innovation across a range of sectors, including medical technologies and pharmaceuticals, and food and fibre.

Melbourne is backed by booming innovation ecosystem, featuring numerous $1 billion-plus valuation companies including Culture Amp, REA Group, MYOB, CarSales.com.au, Aconex, Envato, Airwallex and Latitude Financial.

It is also home to a number of global innovators such as CSL, which is moving its Royal Park headquarters to a purpose-built facility in the heart of the nation’s premier biomedical precinct at Parkville.

Melbourne is also Australia’s leading tech city, as confirmed by the Savills Research Tech Cities in Motion global report released earlier this year, and has attracted investment from some of the world’s leading tech companies, including Zendesk, Square and RecordPoint.
