Victorian sports technology company HITIQ is expanding its advanced manufacturing facility in South Melbourne, strengthening local capability in product development, manufacturing and research and development as it scales its globally recognised concussion technology.
HITIQ’s patented smart mouthguard combines embedded sensors with AI-driven analytics to monitor and assess head impacts in real time. The technology supports faster and more accurate concussion assessment and is helping improve player welfare across elite, community and youth sport.
Over the past decade, HITIQ has invested more than $30 million in research and development to bring the technology to market. Its products have been developed with and used by major sporting organisations including the AFL, AFLW, NRL and the English Premier League.
As awareness of concussion and head injury grows globally, HITIQ is also expanding beyond elite sport into amateur and community settings, including youth programs. In Australia, an estimated 100,000 concussions occur each year, with many going undetected and potentially leading to long-term neurological consequences.
Victoria has played an important role in HITIQ’s growth, offering a strong base of sports technology capability, advanced manufacturing expertise and access to talent. The state is home to 39% of Australia’s sports tech businesses and almost half of the nation’s sports tech jobs, making it a natural location for companies developing next-generation sports innovation.
Invest Victoria supported HITIQ through its investment journey, helping the company strengthen its footprint in Victoria as it expands its manufacturing and R&D capability. This support is contributing to local job creation and helping position Victoria as a leading destination for sports technology innovation and advanced manufacturing.
HITIQ’s expansion reflects growing confidence in Victoria as a place to develop, manufacture and scale high-value technology with global applications. The project will help build local capability in sports tech and medtech while supporting better health outcomes for athletes at all levels of sport.
