The 500-megawatt Kiewa Valley BESS – fast-tracked through the Victorian Government’s Development Facilitation Program – will store low-cost renewable energy during the day and release it during peak demand. Once operational, it will supply reliable power to around 172,000 homes each year.

Trina Solar, a global leader in solar technology and battery storage, brings world-class expertise to Victoria’s clean energy transition.

Located close to the Dederang Terminal Station, the battery strengthens grid stability while supporting Victoria’s clean energy targets.

“This Battery Energy Storage System is another way we’re shoring up energy supply and assisting our transition to 95 percent renewable energy by 2035.”

Lily D’Ambrosio, Minister for Energy

The project is expected generate around 80 construction jobs and six ongoing roles once operational, contributing to the regional clean energy workforce. Planning approval includes conditions to manage bushfire risk, noise, and visual impacts – providing investors certainty around project delivery and long-term operations.

Victoria’s Development Facilitation Program has fast tracked 19 renewable energy projects worth more than $5 billion. Collectively, these projects could power around 570,000 households annually, with battery storage capable of meeting evening peak demand for more than 1.3 million households.

Global market dynamics further enhance Victoria’s appeal. China - the world’s leading renewable energy developer - now accounts for more than 60% of new global renewable capacity through its rapidly growing solar, battery and electric vehicle industries. Partnerships with major international players underscore the commercial potential of Victoria’s clean energy sector.

These strengths are central to Victoria’s China Strategy, a five-year roadmap designed attract Chinese investment, facilitate innovation and deliver economic benefits across the state, including regional areas. the strategy prioritises collaboration with businesses to achieve the state’s clean energy goals, positioning Victoria as a first choice destination for Chinese investment in renewable energy.
