Melbourne has attracted a global innovation leader in sports technology, strengthening its position as Australia’s sporting capital.

UK-based Sportable has established its Asia-Pacific headquarters and Centre of Excellence in Collingwood, Melbourne, creating up to 20 highly specialised roles in software development, hardware engineering, and client delivery.

Sportable chose Melbourne to serve a new AFL market and leverage the state’s thriving sports tech ecosystem, home to 39% of Australia’s sports tech companies.

Sportable’s world-first ‘Smart Ball’ technology delivers real-time insights on ball movement during games, enhancing fan engagement and supporting accurate officiating. The company’s Smart Sherrin, developed in partnership with the AFL, has already assisted with more than 2,000 score reviews in the 2025.

The Collingwood Centre of Excellence serves as the global headquarters for Sportable’s visualisation division. Drawing on Victoria’s skilled talent pool, the facility develops systems and solutions for officiating and high-performance assessment, and fan engagement across multiple sports worldwide, including soccer, volleyball, rugby union, and American football.

Co-created by rugby players and NASA engineers in 2019, Sportable developed the world’s first ‘Smart’ rugby ball by embedding a microchip and integrating it with on-field ball tracking technology.

The arrival of Sportable in Melbourne, a state home to world-class events like the AFL Grand Final and Australian Open, will expand research and development, bringing Sportable’s innovative technology to new global markets.

"The support of the Victorian Government was instrumental in our decision to establish our Asia-Pacific headquarters in Melbourne and open our Centre of Excellence. Victoria is home to a world-class pool of talented professionals and infrastructure that allows us to deliver industry-leading solutions to partners globally, all from our Collingwood offices."
