Melbourne will host the prestigious World's 50 Best Restaurant Awards in 2017.

Established in 2002, the annual ranking of the world's best restaurants has become the most respected source for restaurant ranking in the world.

Melbourne now joins London and New York as the only cities to have hosted the awards program.

Tourism Australia and Visit Victoria are working in partnership with the World's 50 Best team to create a program of high quality events.

Taking place in April 2017, the Melbourne program will include  a chef's feast gathering of the world's best chefs, a main awards ceremony, and touring programs around Melbourne and regional Victoria.

A total of 800 invited guests made up of chefs, industry and top international food and wine media and influencers will take part in the main awards ceremony.

Melbourne's Attica is Australia's only top 50 restaurant on the list, and Brae in the State's west was recently announced at number 65 in the top 100.

The announcement was made in New York at the 2016 awards events by Tourism Australia's Lisa Ronson, and William Drew, World's 50 Best Restaurants Group Editor.

The event will reinforce Melbourne's position on the world stage as a leading events and culinary destination.
