German-based bicycle manufacturer, Canyon Bicycles has announced plans to begin sales in Australia through a new marketing office in Melbourne.

The new office will allow the company to ship and provide sales assistance to customers in Australia and New Zealand.  Canyon has been praised for their high-performance and great value bicycles, and the announcement follows the German brand's expansion into Japan and Korea last year.

"We have been eyeing up Australia and New Zealand for a number of years and are now prepared for market entry," said Canyon's Head of Business Development & Business Intelligence, Ward Grootjans. "When visiting Australia a few months ago I was taken aback by how large and engaged the cycling community is. Talking to riders over there it was clear that Canyon will be most welcome!"

Melbourne has a strong pedigree in supporting cyclists with increased investment in bike-specific infrastructure, bikeshare programs and community safety campaigns.  This infrastructure is one of the reasons that Melbourne has consistently been rated one of the most liveable cities in the world by Monocle magazine, which remarked that the city's improved bike lanes added to its appeal.

Melbourne and its surrounding regions have also hosted elite cycling events including the inaugural Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, which saw a crowd of around 100,000 spectators line Geelong's streets and the Surf Coast circuit in 2014 to watch the world's premier cyclists race.
