Victoria has a long standing and strong bilateral relationship with Japan. The relationship is underpinned by a shared commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as well-as common approaches to international security.

We share deep and longstanding trade, investment and research ties. Japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) into Victoria was valued at A$180 million in FY 2022/23. Victoria accounted for 89% of all Japanese FDI into Australia in FY 2022/23.

Japan is Victoria’s third-largest trading partner and fourth-largest export market. In FY 2022/23, two-way trade between Victoria and Japan was worth A$8.09 billion and exports were valued at A$2.68 billion respectively.

We share deep and longstanding trade, investment and research ties. Japan is Victoria’s seventh largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI), valued at A$184 million in FY 2021/22. Victoria accounted for over 11.25% of all Japanese FDI into Australia in FY 2021/22.

Japan is Victoria’s third-largest trading partner and fourth-largest export market. In FY 2022/23, two-way trade between Victoria and Japan was worth A$8.09 billion and exports were valued at A$2.68 billion respectively.

Victorian Trade and Investment Offices

Supporting our relationship, the Victorian Government has an office in Tokyo which plays a vital role in the facilitation of trade, investment and the establishment of people to people links and partnerships between the two regions. The office in Tokyo focuses on developing and maintaining relationships with potential and current Japanese investors, as well as facilitating exports into Japan from Victoria.

Trade Agreements

Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement

The Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA) provides valuable access for Australia's exporters and will support further two-way investment. JAEPA entered into force in January 2015.

Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is a free trade agreement (FTA) signed on 8 March 2018 between Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, New Zealand, Singapore and Vietnam.

Australia Japan Business Cooperation Committee Conference

This year, the Victorian Government is investing heavily in its relationship with Japan. Melbourne will host the 60th anniversary of the Australia Japan Business Cooperation Committee Conference in October 2023, which will see approximately 500 delegates from Japan and Australia gather in Melbourne.
