Hella: car component manufacturer: new production line in Victoria

Hella opens new $12m production line in Victoria

24 March 2009

German-based car component manufacturer, Hella, has expanded its Melbourne operations with the launch of a state-of-the-art $12 million production line.

The 'Kaizen' line will produce Australian-made lights for Toyota’s Camry, hybrid Camry and Aurion models.

Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, welcomed the opening of Hella Australia's new production line and said the partnership between Toyota Motor Corporation Australia and Hella was a fine example of innovation, collaboration and investment in the future.

“Hella's forward-looking investment shows just the kind of resilience and confidence that will help Australian manufacturing ride out the global economic storm,” he said.

The Federal Government is providing $35 million through the Green Car Innovation Fund as part of a co-investment deal with Toyota to manufacture the hybrid Camry at the company’s Altona plant in Victoria from 2010.

Toyota expects production of the hybrid Camry to result in more than $80 million worth of purchases throughout the Victorian and South Australian automotive components industry.

“Hella's new Kaizen line is an example the way the Government's $6.2 billion New Car Plan for a Greener Future is giving the industry the certainty it needs to invest in developing the cars of the future,” Senator Carr said.

A New Car Plan for a Greener Future aims to make the industry cleaner, greener and more innovative. More information on the plan is available at
