Phantom works brings future of aerospace to Melbourne

23 January 2008

Melbourne is set to play a central role in shaping the future of the global aerospace industry, with Boeing deciding to establish one of two new Phantom Works advanced research and development centres in Port Melbourne.

The new Phantom Works branches will provide R&D support services for Boeing’s Australian business units and act as a focal point for collaboration with local universities, private sector R&D providers, the CSIRO and the Defence Science and Technology Organisation.

Victorian Innovation Minister Gavin Jennings said that “Victoria is Australia's aerospace and aviation centre, home to many of the nation’s strategic manufacturing, service and R&D operations. Local companies are involved in key global supply chains and research initiatives.

“This new centre is a significant addition to Victoria’s capabilities and aligns with the Victorian Government’s innovation agenda which aims to drive development of high-tech industries.

“We look forward to the exciting new opportunities that will be created by the establishment of a Phantom Works base in Melbourne.”
