New flights to Melbourne with Viva Macau

22 October 2009

Low-cost airline Viva Macau has introduced new international air services from Macau to Melbourne with two direct flights per week, enticing tourists to Australia with cheap air fares.

With China forecast to become Victoria’s largest tourism market by 2012, the additional services will bring more tourists to Melbourne and boost the local economy.

Tourism and Major Events Minister Tim Holding stressed the importance of direct air services to Victoria’s growing export sectors, especially tourism, international education and trade.

“Securing Viva Macau to fly directly to Melbourne will help boost tourism numbers from Macau, Southern China and Hong Kong - with Macau just a 10 minute drive from mainland China and a 40 minute ferry ride from Hong Kong,” he said.

According to Mr. Holding, while most other parts of Australia have seen a downturn in tourism, Victoria is showing resilience in the face of the Global Financial Crisis and the devastating Black Saturday bushfires.

“Victoria is continuing to buck the downward international trend in tourism due largely to our year-round calendar of major events, the increased number of business and conference events and the outstanding regional destinations located close to Melbourne,” he said.

The Victorian aviation and aerospace industry employs more than 20,000 people in over 400 businesses, delivering an estimated $600 million to the Victorian economy.
