Shanghai World Expo to showcase Victorian industries

21 October 2009

The 2010 Shanghai World Expo, a six month event, will include a dedicated Victoria Week showcasing Victorian industries, capabilities and strengths in key sectors such as manufacturing, design and science.

In Canberra to attend the launch of Australia’s Pavilion for the World Expo, Minister for Industry and Trade Martin Pakula said, “The Brumby Labor Government is investing $6 million to ensure Victoria’s reputation as a leading destination to live, work, study and invest are recognised on the world stage,”

“The World Expo will promote Victoria’s capabilities and strength in industries as diverse as biotechnology, nanotechnology, automotive manufacturing, arts, research, sustainable design and renewable energy.”

Mr Pakula said Victoria Week, running from 17-23 May, will be a key opportunity to highlight Victoria’s world-class products and services to the world.

Australia’s state of the art ‘Classroom of the Future’ centrepiece at the World Expo, expected to run in the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum and then in the Urban Best Practice Zone in August, will give visitors a taste of Victoria’s education system.

The 100 m
2 virtual classroom will showcase Victoria’s knowledge and expertise in all levels of education as well as providing space for other industries such as information technology and renewable energy to promote their capabilities.

Mr Pakula said the event will build on the success of Victoria’s participation in previous World Expos and be supplemented by approximately 17 business missions to China as well as inbound trade delegations from China into Victoria.

“The last Expo was in Aichi, Japan in 2005 and this upcoming Expo, in the home of Victoria’s largest trading partner, will open up a range of opportunities for Victorian Companies,” he said.

The Shanghai World Expo will run from 1 May until 31 October 2010. More than 70 million people from 200 countries are expected to attend the Expo and it is anticipated around 38,000 people will walk through Australia’s Pavilion each day.
