A new innovation business precinct in South East Melbourne will create jobs for Victorians through increased local and international investment, Innovation Minister Gavin Jennings said today.
|
Mr Jennings signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the South East Melbourne Innovation Precinct (SEMIP) partners. He said the initiative would create a centralised business environment in which companies and research organisations can benefit from networking opportunities, shared knowledge and information.
He said the focus will be on high-end growth sectors such as chemicals, polymers, machinery and equipment with applications in transport, health, construction and the environment.
The SEMIP initiative is a partnership involving Government, CSIRO, Monash University, Australian Synchrotron, Small Technologies Cluster and the Councils of Greater Dandenong, Kingston, Knox and Monash working in consultation with industry. It aims to energise the south east by creating a high profile innovation business and knowledge capital for the Asia Pacific.
“SEMIP is home to 40 per cent of Victoria’s manufacturing activities and over 56,000 registered businesses. The precinct is ideally positioned to be an innovation business and knowledge hub, creating long-term job opportunities”, Mr Jennings said.
He said SEMIP is ideally located just 25 kilometres from central Melbourne.
“I anticipate that national and international companies will be attracted to the precinct because of its existing strengths and future opportunities,” said Mr Jennings.
“I encourage smaller businesses to join the precinct to take advantage of access to cutting-edge research, information, open paths to markets and increased international credibility.”
