World’s largest tortilla producer has appetite for Victoria

14 September 2009

The world’s largest tortilla producer has chosen Melbourne to set up its manufacturing and logistics hub, creating 470 new jobs.

From humble beginnings in Mexico in 1949, Mission Foods, now headquartered in Texas, is the largest tortilla and corn flour producer in the world and is engaged primarily in the production, marketing, distribution and sale of tortillas, chips, wraps, Pita and Lebanese breads, flat breads corn and wheat flour.

Mission Foods has operations in Mexico, the USA, Central America, Europe and the Asia Pacific and will now set up a brand new facility in Epping, in Melbourne’s north.

Victorian Premier John Brumby said Mission Foods produced more than a quarter of the world’s tortillas and exported to 50 countries worldwide.

“Having their manufacturing and logistics hub here is a major achievement and a major vote of confidence for Victoria and our economy.

“Victoria has a resilient, growing economy, competitive taxes, a well trained workforce and a government that works in partnership with the business sector to bring jobs to the state despite the impact of the global financial crisis.

“Mission Foods was also attracted to Victoria because of our strong and ongoing commitment to multiculturalism,” he said.

Victorian Regional, Rural Development and Skills and Workforce Participation Minister Jacinta Allan said the manufacturing process at the new Epping facility was based on state-of-the-art technology created by Gruma Technology, a global subsidiary of Mission Foods.

“Gruma has partnered with the Adult Multicultural Education Services (AMES) to train some of the new Mission Foods employees who are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds,” Ms Allan said.

“Mission Foods have invested heavily in Victoria, not only commercially, but also from a community perspective.

“Mission Foods are major sponsors of the Western Bulldogs AFL team and plan to expand their employee training program with the assistance of AMES and the Spirit West Bulldogs community-based training organisation,” she said.
