Victorian biotechnology companies are primed for partnerships with their international counterparts, thanks to a new Biotechnology International Partnering Program (BIPP).

The pilot program aims to assist Victoria’s small-to-medium-sized biotechnology companies to move onto the world stage, attending recognised overseas biotechnology conferences and trade events which provide direct opportunities for partnering and licensing deals.
Victorian Innovation Minister Gavin Jennings said the Victorian Government program was aimed at ensuring the Victorian biotechnology industry remained globally competitive.
“The biotech sector relies heavily on partnering and licensing deals to commercialise products but there are significant development and commercialisation barriers that Victorian biotechnology firms face in the international arena which have been compounded by the global financial crisis,” Mr Jennings said.
“The aim of the BIPP is to give companies some assistance to overcome these hurdles and promote themselves, and Victorian biotech capabilities, to the world.
“Under the BIPP Victorian companies will be able to participate in international events such as trade fairs and conferences which may have been out of their reach previously. It will also allow them to the select events that best suit their needs,” he said.
The announcement comes ahead of AusBiotech 2009, the premier biotechnology conference for the Asia Pacific region, to be held in Melbourne next month. The conference incorporates an extensive BioIndustry Exhibition and Business Matching Program to bring together representatives from the global biotechnology industry.
