The completion of ANZ Bank’s new global headquarters in Docklands brings the Victorian financial services sector’s investment in the precinct to over $1 billion, making it Australia’s leading banking, finance and insurance district.

Minister for Financial Services, John Lenders, said along with NAB, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, AXA Asia Pacific and Medibank Private, the area will host 17,500 financial services employees when the ANZ centre becomes fully operational.
Mr Lenders said Victoria was an attractive place for financial services businesses with its world renowned lifestyle, resilient economy and the majority of Australia’s major fund managers located in the state.
Mr Lenders said, “This modern Docklands precinct gives Victoria’s financial services employees the best working conditions in the country. Workers can enjoy outstanding restaurants, cafes, public transport and entertainment options at the doorstep of their place of work.”
Victoria’s financial services sector currently comprises nine per cent of Victoria’s economy and around 100,000 employees.
According to Mr Lenders, a particular strength of Victoria’s financial services sector was its ability to adapt to new challenges on the horizon.
“Despite the impact of the Global Financial Crisis Victoria’s financial services companies are preparing for the future by tapping into emerging markets with high growth potential such as carbon trading and superannuation products and are poised to take advantage of future opportunities,” he said.
Registered for three Green Star categories with the Green Building Council of Australia, the ANZ centre has numerous integrated sustainable features.
The building’s green credentials include wind turbines, 1,000 square metres of solar panels on the roof and an onsite tri-generation power plant that generates power using natural gas. Heat from the power plant is re-used in the air conditioner and boiler and the efficient air conditioner also uses river cooling and other innovative technology.
Rainwater collection, blackwater recycling, a green roof and shading designs are some of its other features.
Compared to the average Australian office building, ANZ’s new Docklands building is expected to reduce water and energy consumption by 60%, the equivalent of taking 2,200 cars off the road every year.
